Erica (Chocolate and Lemon Stuffed Olives):

Your thoughts of the dish before tasting: “It’s a mix of some of my favorite foods! I was excited.”

What word would you use to describe the dish? “Intersectional; transgressive”

Overall impression: “Delicious! All of the flavors are really bold and distinct, but for some reason they come together really well. And the taste changes as you chew – you taste the salty olive and sweet/bitter chocolate first, and then the lemon, and then the spice lingers afterward. Very satisfying.”

Would you try it again? “Definitely”

How would you alter this dish? “Maybe more chocolate. Also, it might be good served chilled instead of hot.”

Jessica (Chicken Apple Congee):

Your thoughts of the dish before tasting: “The bar was set high because of the exemplary chicken congee I had in Bali. I dream about those flavors…”

What word would you use to describe the dish? “Nourishing”

Overall impression: “The dish was light and homey. The apple was surprisingly savory, and the soup tasted healthy in a good way.”

Would you try it again? “Yes! Every morning.”

How would you alter this dish? “I would experiment with adding more chicken fat to the soup like the one in Bali. I felt that the consistency was nice for fall, but a thicker soup would be good for winter. Also, it wasn’t very weird. Add pickles?”

Ian (Coffee Chili):

Your thoughts of the dish before tasting: “Brown.”

What word would you use to describe the dish? “complicated. Beefy”

Overall impression: “The best FwF so far.”

Would you try it again? “No.”

How would you alter this dish? “Less beefy”

Erica (Tofu Delight):

Your thoughts of the dish before tasting: “It seems like creme brûlée reimagined for China instead of France”

What word would you use to describe the dish? “Textural”

Overall impression: “I really liked the savory tofu mixed with the ice cream and the caramel. The caramel was a little bit difficult to break, but it didn’t ruin the dish. “

Would you try it again? “Yes!”

How would you alter this dish? “More caramel, and smaller, more manageable pieces of tofu.”

Bitter Melon Jello

Check out the menu2!

Things got interesting this time. My local grocery store only had almond-flavored jello so I used that instead of lime! I also included my friend’s responses in this edition!

Jessica (Bitter Melon Jello-ish)

Your thoughts of the dish before tasting:“I was terrified because i hate Jello!”

What word would you use to describe the dish? “Boundary-pushing”

Overall impression: “I expected to struggle most with the Jello texture, but the dish surprised me by being repulsive in other ways. the flavors pushed the boundaries of what human taste buds can handle, and it was bold, provocative, and…kind of gross.”

Would you try it again? “For 1,000 RMB”

How would you alter this dish? “I would be interested in trying it with actual Jello.”

Menu 1

So happy to finally start my Food with Friend series! I was a little nervous at first not knowing whether or not I’d be able to pull off these four dishes. Now that they’ve been eaten and tested, I can finally take a moment to reflect. I thought the dishes turned out well but my friends’ reactions were even better!  Be sure to click on the link above to see the first FwF menu! Thank you to my friends for being my guinea pigs!
